Taste of the Opera
Everyone loves a behind-the-scenes experience – be it film, the theatre or opera. Perhaps opera has a particular allure because it is grand. The costumes, the props, hair and make-up, set design, stage direction, and the music; they are all big and they are all part of the world of opera.
As a way of engaging patrons in this special world, Calgary Opera holds a unique behind-the-scenes event on the Friday evening prior to the opening of each mainstage production. Taste of the Opera, it is exactly that, a ‘taste’ of each of the upcoming shows. The Mamdani Opera Centre opens its doors for an insider’s look, followed by a taste of food and drink from the region in which the featured opera takes place.
The educational program for the Taste varies with each performance. It could be a moderated panel of production team members discussing the inspiration for the set design, the construction process in building the set, and the importance of production lighting. Most often the evening includes performances by Calgary Opera’s Emerging Artists, and it always is a wonderful time to socialize with opera-goers and friends over a glass of wine and a hors d’oeuvre.
