Tyrone PatersonTyrone Paterson, Conductor

One of Canada's leading opera conductors, Tyrone Paterson has led numerous performances throughout Europe, the United States, Asia and Canada. He has held the position of Artistic Director and Principal Conductor of Opera Lyra Ottawa since 1998. OLO performs at the National Arts Centre of Canada with the National Arts Centre Orchestra in the pit. Under his guidance, OLO has experienced considerable growth and is now recognized as one of the country's leading opera companies. His first appearance with Opera Lyra Ottawa was in 1994 conducting Tosca and he has since led many of the company's greatest successes. He also serves as Music Advisor and Principal Conductor for Manitoba Opera and as an Artistic Advisor to Opera Hong Kong.  Maestro Paterson last conducted Turandot (2005) for Calgary Opera.

 

aBrian Deedrick, Stage Director

Edmonton Opera Artistic Director Brian Deedrick, a long-time favourite of Calgary Opera, has directed past productions of The Magic Flute, Madame Butterfly, Don Giovanni, Aida, La Bohème, and more recently, Lakmé. Mr. Deedrick has directed for numerous opera companies, including Edmonton Opera, Pacific Opera, Opera Arizona, Opera Carolina, Opera Lyra Ottawa, He also directed a production of Lakmé for the International Vocal Arts Institute in Tel Aviv, Israel.  He last directed for Calgary Opera for Turandot (2005)

Peter McGillivrayPeter McGillivray, Baritone (Bretigny)

Baritone Peter McGillivray won 1st Prize in the CBC Competition, Deuxieme Grand Prix and Chalmers Award at the Montreal International Competition, and the Silver Medal at the Queen Sonja competition in Oslo, Norway.  Recent credits include Schaunard in La Boheme and Dolokhov/General Belliard in War & Peace (Canadian Opera Company),  Duruflé Requiem (Vancouver Chamber Choir), Messiah (National Arts Centre Orchestra and Winnipeg Symphony), Raoul in The Shadow (Tapestry), Carmina Burana (Brott Festival),  and Publio in La Vestale (Opera in Concert). Upcoming: Don Magnifico in La Cenerentola (Pacific Opera Victoria), Messiah (Elmer Iseler Singers), and Opera to Go (Tapestry).

Michel CorbeilMichel Corbeil, Tenor (Guillot de Morfontaine)

One of Canada’s finest character tenors, Michel Corbeil distinguishes himself through his versatility, highly praised acting and comedic timing. His most notable roles include Der Hauptmann in Wozzeck, Goro in Madama Butterfly, Nick in La Fanciulla del West, Pong in Turandot, Don Basilio in Le Nozze di Figaro, Tobias in Sweeney Todd, Sellem in The Rake’s Progress, Little Bat in Susannah, Monostatos in Die Zauberflöte, and The First Jew in Salome. Originally from Montreal, he finished Musical studies at McGill University and Trained at l’Atelier Lyrique de L’Opéra de Montréal. Most recently for Calgary Opera, Mr. Corbeil performed in Ariadne auf Naxos (2009).

Michelle MinkeMichelle Minke, Soprano (Pousette)

Calgarian Soprano Michelle Minke is a graduate of The Royal Academy of Music opera school in London, England, and the University of Toronto. Michelle is an alumni of Calgary Opera’s Emerging Artists Program where she debuted as Film person 3 and covered the role of Anna in the world premiere of Frobisher. Other career highlights include British Youth Opera, Royal Academy Opera, the Canadian Opera Company, Opera Nuova, the Georg Solti Accademia, and the Center for Opera studies in Italy. She has also performed in Calgary’s Mountainview festival, The Anghiari Festival in Italy,The Spittlefields festival in London, and Toronto’s International Bach festival.

Lauren PhillipsLauren Phillips, Mezzo-Soprano (Javotte)

Born in Ottawa, Lauren Phillips has a Masters of Music (University of Western Ontario), and studied with Anita Krause-Weibe.  Roles include L'enfant in L'enfant et les sortilèges (Ravel), the Mother/Grandmother in Barab’s Little Red Riding Hood, Dorabella, and Nancy in Albert Herring.  In April 2009 she toured Europe, including Paris, performing Love Songs (Ana Sokolovic), a staged piece for solo singer a cappella, with Queen of Puddings Music Theatre.  Reviews of Love Songs have described her singing as “incantatory” (Tamara Bernstein, Globe and Mail), and Lauren as a “truly phenomenal performer” (Zagreb, Croatia review).

Dionne SellingerDionne Sellinger, Mezzo-Soprano (Rosette)

Mezzo-Soprano Dionne Sellinger was a member of Calgary Opera’s Inaugural Emerging Young Artists Program.  Highlights of the year included the world premiere of John Estacio’s Frobisher, and a tour of the children’s opera The Brothers Grimm. Fall of 2008 Ms. Sellinger toured the role of Rosie in The Barber of Barkerville with V.O.I.S., and joined with the Calgary Opera Young Artists as Maman in Ravels’s L’enfant et les sortilèges.   She sang Rosina in Rossini’s The Barber of Seville, withBurnaby Lyric Opera and the title role in Gilbert & Sullivan’s Iolanthe with Dragon Divas Opera. 

Matthew CassilsMatthew Cassils, Baritone (Innkeeper)

The recipient of many prizes and scholarships, Matthew Cassils obtained his Bachelor of Music from The Schulich School at McGill University and his Artist Diploma from The Glenn Gould School at the Royal Conservatory of Music. His repertoire includes both Masetto and the title role in Don Giovanni, Figaro and Count Almaviva in The Marriage of Figaro, Papageno in Die Zauberflöte and Guglielmo in Cosi Fan Tutte.  With the Jeunesses Musicales he performed Dr. Falke from Die Fledermaus, Somnus in Semele and Antinoo in Monteverdi’s Ulysses.  In the Opus award-winning production of Wozzeck Mr. Cassils performed the Second Artisan.

Etienne DupuisEtienne Dupuis, Baritone (Lescaut)

Mr. Dupuis completed his studies in voice at McGill University where he appeared in productions of Les contes d'Hoffmann, Cavalli's La Calisto and in the role of Belcore in L'elisir d'amore.  He was a member of l'Atelier Lyrique de l'Opéra de Montréal, where he performed Escamillo and Dancaïre in Carmen and Peter in Hänsel und Gretel.  Mr. Dupuis sang frequently with l'Opéra de Montréal including roles in Rigoletto, Die Zauberflöte and La bohème.  During their 2004-2005 season, he obtained roles in every production including Mandarino in Turandot, Aeneas in Dido and Aeneas and Dancaïre in Carmen. Recently, Mr. Dupuis took on the role of Johnny Rockfort in the operatic version of Starmania for l’Opéra de Québec.

Nathalie PaulinNathalie Paulin, Soprano (Manon)

Soprano Nathalie Paulin has established herself in Canada, the United States, Europe and the Far East as an interpretive artist of the very first rank. Winner of the 2005 Dora Mavor Moore Award for Outstanding Opera Performance, she has collaborated with internationally renowned conductors including Jane Glover, Yannick Nézet-Séguin, Andrew Parrott, Jonathan Darlington, Hervé Niquet, David Agler, Richard Bradshaw, Bernard Labadie, Mario Bernardi, Graeme Jenkins, Andrew Litton and Yoav Talmi on both the concert platform and in opera. Ms. Paulin debuted for L’Opéra de Montréal as Mélisandein Pélléas et Mélisande and for Chicago Opera Theater as Galatea in Acis and Galatea. She was re-engaged by Chicago Opera Theater for the title role in Semele and for Mary in La Resurrezione, both by Handel. She has also been heard as Constance in Dialogues of the Carmelites and Micaela in Carmen for Calgary Opera, Zerlina in Don Giovanni for L’Opéra de Québec, and Susanna in Le Nozze Di Figaro for Cincinnati Opera. The Dallas Opera featured her in Carmen and Cunning Little Vixen.

Richard TrovellRichard Troxell ,Tenor (Chevalier Des Grieux)

Richard Troxell's beautiful lyric tenor voice has been thrilling audiences wherever he has sung on stages around the world and in the United States.  Richard Troxell's most recent engagements included Pinkerton in Madama Butterfly in a sold out début with Opéra de Montréal, a reprise of his role as Christian in Cyrano de Bergerc for Opéra de Monte Carlo, and the title role in Zampa at the Opéra Comique in Paris.  Mr. Troxell's recording credits include the role of Pinkerton in Madame Butterfly for the Sony label, the role of Beppe in I pagliacci under the baton of Georges Prêtre, and several compositions by American Jewish composers including Masada by Marvin David Levy with the Berlin Radio Symphony. He is the featured soloist on the sold-out CD What A Wonderful World.

Andrew Stewart, Bass (Comte Des Grieux)

Known for his “powerful voice” and “formidable stage presence,” Bass Andrew Stewart has performed a wide range of operatic bass and bass-baritone repertoire. Most recently, Andrew performed Nourabad in Bizet's Les pêcheurs de perles with Edmonton Opera. Other recent engagements included Commendatore in Gazzaniga’s Don Giovanni, the Ram in Stravinsky’s Renard, Angelotti in Puccini’s Tosca, Chekunov in Janacek’s House of the Dead and Antonio in Mozart’s Le Nozze di Figaro for the Canadian Opera Company. Upcoming engagements include Antonio in Le Nozze di Figaro and The Bonze in Puccini's Madama Butterfly for Vancouver Opera.
