Critical Acclaim

Moby-Dick is a co-production between Calgary Opera, The Dallas Opera, San Francisco Opera, San Diego Opera and The State Opera of South Australia. At its world premiere with The Dallas Opera it garnered this critical acclaim:

“Moby-Dick, the opera, is a triumph. Stunningly staged and sung, it captures the elemental forces of the sea and Captain Ahab's obsession with the great white whale that has maimed him."

- Scott Cantrell, Dallas Morning News

“Scheer’s distillation of the action, in combination with Heggie’s musically lush, confidently written, aptly proportioned and forthrightly tonal score, makes for an absorbing night at the opera.”

- George Loomis, The Classical Review

“Mr. Scheer’s libretto was an economical wonder, casting off Melville’s landlocked opening and tretches of minutiae regarding whales and whaling. What remained was a taut, two-act adventure yarn.”

- Steve Smith, The New York Times

”The captain never kills the object of his unrelenting pursuit. Composer Jake Heggie, however, achieved his goal Friday night, with an achingly beautiful, magnificently sung and gorgeously staged world premiere of his "Moby-Dick," the highlight of the Dallas Opera's first season at the sparkling new Winspear Opera House. The audience responded with an eight-minute standing ovation.”

- Ronald Blum, The Huffington Post

“It was quite a gamble to take on the American literary classic, but it paid off handsomely. Moby-Dick makes gripping musical theater, with a spectacular production reinforcing the opera's dramatic power. At the end the enthusiastic audience gave Heggie and Scheer their heaviest applause.”

- Jerome Weeks, Art & Seek North Texas
