Students from Hillhurst School creating Doppel during Let's Create an Opera

Building generations of opera lovers.

Education programs are an essential part of what we do, enriching the experiences of our current patrons and building audiences for tomorrow through student and young people outreach. This includes great programs like Let’s Create an Opera that gives students the opportunity to create their own original opera, the Opera in Schools Tour that brings one-act operas into schools performed by Calgary Opera’s Emerging Artists, and Allegro Group for those opera lovers (or soon to be opera lovers) under 35.

Discover everything you need to know about opera, and Calgary Opera.

This section will teach you everything you need to know about Calgary opera, and opera - from buying a ticket to shouting Toi Toi Toi! at the end of the performance, and everything in-between. You can also discover our Emerging Artist Development Program. Each season, Calgary Opera provides up to eight young singers with the opportunity to study and perform under a highly prestigious professional staff of teachers and performers. This program acts as a bridge between post-secondary education and the professional opera world.

Enbridge believes in making communities culturally vibrant through investments in the arts. We thank them for their generous support of our Emerging Artist program.

We thrive with your support.

2017-2018 Season

On the Mainstage

November 18, 22 & 24, 2017

Our season opens with this classic, one of the world’s most-popular comic operas. Escape into the hilarious high-jinx of Count Almaviva, as he plots against Doctor Bartolo (with the help of the town barber – and jack of all trades - Figaro), to win the love of the beautiful Rosina. Expect lots of laughs, and Rossini’s most famous music.

  February 3, 7 & 9, 2018

We continue our mainstage productions with an epic Russian masterpiece. Tatyana is introduced to the dashing Onegin and immediately falls in love. He coldly rejects her. His choice to flirt with Olga, fiancée of his friend Lensky, results in a heart-stopping duel between the two. Years later, Onegin realizes he loves Tatyana, however it is too late. Escape into Tchaikovsky’s beautiful soaring arias and orchestral music. Expect to see a new Calgary Opera production of this classic.

April 14, 18 & 20, 2018

Our final production of the season is one of the world’s most-produced and beloved operas. Escape into this love triangle as Tosca, a famous opera singer, becomes the object of affection of two men, Scarpia, the Chief of Police and her true love, Cavardossi, a famous painter. When Scarpia uses his influence to have Cavardossi killed, and attempts to rape Tosca, she kills him. Once Tosca realizes Cavaradossi is dead, she plunges to her own death. Expect to be moved by this romantically tragic story and Puccini’s superb score.

August 10-13 & 17-20, 2017
