Students from Hillhurst School creating Doppel during Let's Create an Opera

Building generations of opera lovers.

Education programs are an essential part of what we do, enriching the experiences of our current patrons and building audiences for tomorrow through student and young people outreach. This includes great programs like Let’s Create an Opera that gives students the opportunity to create their own original opera, the Opera in Schools Tour that brings one-act operas into schools performed by Calgary Opera’s Emerging Artists, and Allegro Group for those opera lovers (or soon to be opera lovers) under 35.

Discover everything you need to know about opera, and Calgary Opera.

This section will teach you everything you need to know about Calgary opera, and opera - from buying a ticket to shouting Toi Toi Toi! at the end of the performance, and everything in-between. You can also discover our Emerging Artist Development Program. Each season, Calgary Opera provides up to eight young singers with the opportunity to study and perform under a highly prestigious professional staff of teachers and performers. This program acts as a bridge between post-secondary education and the professional opera world.

We thrive with your support.

Ticket sales cover less than a third of the cost of producing live opera, even on sold-out shows. We rely on government funding, sponsorships from corporations, and charitable donations to ensure that opera is alive and well for our community.

2019-20 Season Announcement

Calgary Opera has been celebrating music, storytelling and passion on a grand scale for over 48 years, and our 2019-20 season is no exception.

"As this is my first season with Calgary Opera I didn't have the pleasure of selecting the exceptional line-up of programming that awaits us in ths captivating and fun-filled season. but I couldn't be happier to be here to present and share in it with Calgary's wonderful community of music lovers." - Bramwell Tovey O.C., Artistic Director

From the beautiful and immensely popular refrains of Puccini’s La Bohème, to the emotionally-charged drama of Bellini’s Norma, to the gorgeous frivolity of Richard Strauss’ hidden gem Ariadne auf Naxos, this season does delightful double duty, being both enriching and highly entertaining from start to finish.

Though long-time Calgary Opera fans will have seen versions of these titles on our stage before, this season we’re delighted to be bringing you a season of never-before-seen productions, including one designed by renowned Irish stage designer Gary McCann that made its debut in Europe at Nederlandse Reisopera.

The fantastic roster of Canadian and international talent we have joining us this season could easily be mistaken for the line-up from any of the world’s most renowned opera houses. We are so fortunate to have joining us singers Miriam Khalil, Antoine Bélanger, Aviva Fortunata, David Pomeroy and Sharleen Joynt, director Brenna Corner and conductor Gordon Gerrard who are all home-grown here in Canada. Stunning sopranos Rebecca Nash and Renée Rapier as well as director Nicholas Muni, all hail from the United States of America. Conductor Alice Farnham, and director Laurence Dale come to us from the United Kingdom. And conductor Jonathan Brandani was born in Italy.

Beyond our Jubilee Auditorium productions, we also have a wonderful schedule of community programming that’s perfect for families or anyone who simply can’t get enough opera.
SUNDAY OPERA BRUNCH – An intimate concert and brunch rolled into one delicious package.
CHRISTMAS AT THE OPERA – Featuring a reprise of Menotti’s charming Amahl and the Night Visitors along with seasonal selections and a sing-along at the Mamdani Opera Centre.
EMERGING ARTIST SHOWCASE – An opera-in-concert version of Berlioz’s Béatrice et Bénédict, a delightful musical adaptation of Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing performed at the Mamdani Opera Centre.

2019-20 is a season that grows with you. For those who are relatively new to opera or experiencing live opera for the first time, this carefully curated series of productions allows you to gradually deepen your appreciation of the art form with every show. From a popular classic that inspired the musical RENT, to a sensational bel canto opera that is a showcase for a truly remarkable performance by the fierce title character, to a joyous and larger than life version of a less well-known (but no less beautiful) German masterpiece.

And with our new OPERA DISCOVERY PASS – offering first time subscribers all three main stage shows for the remarkable price of $165 – there’s absolutely no reason to miss a single moment of it.
