Announcing Dr. Tara Laberge as the new McPhee Artist Development Program Manager
Calgary Opera is pleased to announce the appointment of Tara Laberge as the new Calgary Opera McPhee Artist Development Program Manager, beginning September 1, 2025. A passionate Canadian arts leader, Dr. Laberge brings extensive experience as a performer, educator, and adjudicator, along with specialized expertise in artist training and arts administration that will ensure a bright next chapter for Calgary Opera’s professional opera training program.
The McPhee Artist Development Program is Calgary Opera’s talent launchpad, bridging the gap between academic training and professional opera careers by providing up to eight young singers each season with mentorship, performance opportunities, and real-world experience in one of the arts' most competitive fields. The program actively recruits artists from all backgrounds, working to diversify opera’s historically exclusive industry while creating inclusive spaces for emerging talent.
“We are thrilled to welcome Tara to our team,” said Sue Elliott, Calgary Opera General Director and CEO. “Her diverse artistic background and commitment to nurturing emerging talent make her the ideal leader for our McPhee program as we continue to develop the next generation of opera stars.”
Dr. Laberge is a multi-disciplinary artist who has performed professionally across opera, oratorio, musical theatre, and film/television at venues spanning Canada and the US. As a soprano soloist, she has performed with prestigious ensembles including the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra and Calgary Opera Chorus. Since earning her Doctor of Musical Arts in Vocal Performance, she has maintained an active teaching career, currently at Strathcona-Tweedsmuir School, with previous faculty positions at institutions including Ambrose University, Rocky Mountain College, and the Mount Royal University Conservatory.
