Meet our Artists: Dion Mazerolle is Dr. Bartolo

Every great Barber must have a nemesis.

Dion Mazerolle makes his Calgary Opera debut in April’s The Barber of Seville (APR 18–24, 2026) as Figaro’s least favourite client, Dr. Bartolo. The role of the blustering patriarch is famous for its comedy gold and lightning-fast patter — opera’s name for singing a million words a minute — and Mazerolle is up for the challenge.

We spoke with the Acadian baritone about this can’t-miss-it piece of iconic opera:

What three words would you use to describe The Barber of Seville?

Dion Mazerolle: ”Feisty. Fireworks. Fun.”

What do you have in common with your character?

DM: “I feel Bartolo is a little pigheaded in keeping everything under control, but he is faced with consistent issues that keep him from getting what he wants. Pivoting is key for Bartolo. I feel that’s how life is as well. You think you know your path, you plan and then…oops! Pivot! Being nimble on my feet is what I strive to be.”

What's your favourite fast tongue-twister in this show?

DM: “Dr. Bartolo gets to sing some the fastest patter in his aria that I have ever done in my career. But I have to say my favourite is when the whole cast is singing patter in the Act I finale. It’s a whirlwind of sound for the audience that is so much fun to sing.”

What do you hope audiences will hear or discover in The Barber of Seville?

DM: “I hope Calgary Opera’s audience will appreciate how much fun opera can be. The physical comedy, vocal acrobatics, and quick wit from these characters are sure to amuse and amaze.”
