Meet the Trouts: Ali DeRegt

When Calgary-based puppeteer Ali DeRegt takes the big stage for our upcoming Hansel and Gretel (Jan. 31-Feb. 6), it will mark her operatic debut. DeRegt, who creates everything from live theatre to puppetry for Apple TV’s Fraggle Rock: Back To The Rock, couldn’t be more excited to join in the storytelling of Hansel and Gretel, brought to life by the mind-boggling design courtesy of The Old Trout Puppet Workshop.

In our exclusive interview, DeRegt teases what’s awesome about puppetry and opera, and the costume item that makes her feel like a rockstar.

What are your three words to describe Old Trout’s puppets for Hansel and Gretel?

“Magical, timeless, whimsical.”

Who is your favourite puppet character from this show? Why?

“My favourite puppet character is the Witch! She’s such an impressive puppet and I get to wear these giant platform shoes that make me feel like a Spice Girl.”

Why do opera and puppetry go well together?

“I think they are both classic forms of storytelling that work to elevate each other. Puppetry is a visual spectacle and opera is a musical spectacle.”

What makes Hansel and Gretel a great first opera?

“This production is a lot of fun. It’s accessible, this version is in English, and it’s a story that folks are familiar with.”

What are you most excited about for Hansel and Gretel in Calgary?

“I’m excited to perform my first opera! Everyone is so talented and welcoming, it’s such a treat to be in the room.”

Hansel and Gretel runs from Jan. 31-Feb. 6, 2026, at the Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium. Tickets are available here — and they’re always half-price for under-18.
