  • Learn about the twin roles of mentor and mentee in the competitive world of opera performance and technical theatre training. Panelists include newly appointed McPhee Artist Development Program Manager Dr. Tara Laberge and returning McPhee artist bass-baritone Luke Noftall, who will share insights into the role of the young artist program in the Canadian opera ecosystem. Joining them are IATSE Local 212’s long-serving scenic construction mentor Dean Baker, and IATSE apprentice Xavier Michaud.

In this interactive panel discussion, discover the personal and professional traits required to make the most of a career in opera – onstage and behind the scenes – as well as immediately usable guidance for any mentor-mentee relationship and inspiration for your own professional learning journey.

  • For over a decade, the woman responsible for creating some of Calgary Opera’s most iconic looks has been Head of Wardrobe Heather Moore. With over 30 years of experience in opera and film, Heather is known for her attentiveness to every artist’s needs and unwavering commitment to production quality. Heather has been honoured with multiple industry accolades including the 2023 Betty Mitchell Award for Calgary Opera’s celebrated new production of Macbeth.

You’ll also have a chance to connect with like-minded costume afficionados and enjoy up close the visual splendour of costumes built for the largest stages in town.

  • Join Calgary’s own triple threat: set, lighting, and projection designer Scott Reid as he uncovers the process of building a world on stage. From imagination to reality, Scott delivers some of the most breathtaking moments onstage, including the mysteries behind seven locked doors in Bluebeard’s Castle, ghosts hovering above the stage in Macbeth, and the enchantment of The Cunning Little Vixen for the Banff Centre. A regular collaborator with companies including Alberta Theatre Projects, Decidedly Jazz Danceworks, and Theatre Calgary, Scott has over 20 nominations and awards to his name.

A dedicated mentor, Scott has taught the next generation of designers through courses at the University of Calgary since 2017. For one night only, take a seat in his classroom: gain expert insights into the art and craft of scenic design as well as universally relatable guidance on staying inspired, effective artistic collaboration, and thoughtful planning for dramatic results.
