McPhee Voices: Kelsey Ronn
Fresh off her hilarious run as Berta in The Barber of Seville, it's the perfect time to connect with McPhee Artist Development Program member-turned-alumna, Kelsey Ronn. After two seasons with Calgary Opera, Ronn is now a graduate of the McPhee Program, and she's set to take the skills and wisdom she's gleaned into the world of professional opera:
What was a highlight for you during your time in the McPhee program? Why?
Kelsey Ronn: "Anytime I had the opportunity to perform in front of an audience was a highlight. The stage truly feels like a second home to me. It's my sanctuary, if you will."
What were your biggest learning curves as a McPhee Artist?
KR: "Learning how to calm myself down in healthy ways and trusting myself were the biggest learning curves."
What do you know now about opera that you didn't before you joined the program?
KR: "Much like professional athletes, opera singers often deal with high-pressure situations. Therefore, I did not realize how integral it is to regulate one's nervous system until going through the program."
What's next? Tell us about an upcoming project that you're excited about.
KR: "Banff Summer Opera Program in June/July, and singing with the Saskatoon Symphony Orchestra’s 96th Birthday Donor Appreciation Concert and Gala in November."
[Note: the Gala is on SAT NOV 21, 2026, conducted by Karl Hirzer, and is free to anyone who makes a donation of $100 or more to the Saskatoon Symphony Orchestra.]
