First Time at the Opera? Here's your Cheat Sheet

If you're joining us for the first time — welcome! We've got everything you need to get the most out of your opera experience.

THERE'S NO DRESS CODE

It's easy to assume that going to the opera means busting out the crisp tux or biggest ballgown — but never fear the stereotypes! Here at Calgary Opera, you can come as you are. Show up flashy in your flex fit, bring on the glittery garb, or come casual — you’ll find a bit of everything at our shows, and all are welcome.

YOU DON'T HAVE TO "GET" OPERA

Don't let the experts sway you: there's no "right" way to see an opera. Our shows are meant to be enjoyed by all, whether you're an opera veteran or you're joining us for the first time.

During the show, you’ll see projected English captions above the stage, so there’s no need to brush up on your Italian before you come. (Hint: we even use captions when our shows are sung in English!)

And if it adds to your experience, our House Program is full of plot details and deep-dives into the story; you can grab a copy in the lobby before you head into the show, or find it online with one of the QR codes we’ll have available to scan.

Hot tip: show up 1hr early to check out our live Opera Talk, included with your ticket. Head up to the First Balcony Lobby, and settle in with one of our engaging opera pros, who’ll give you insider info and fascinating context to boost your experience in the theatre.

Hotter tip: come, sit, and enjoy. There's no homework necessary, only optional ways to add to your experience.

THERE ARE BREAKS, THERE ARE BARS

Our shows usually run between 2-3h, including a 25m intermission about halfway through. Concessions are open before the show and during intermission, and you can order (and pre-order!) a bevvie and snack of your choice. You can eat in the lobby, and bring your drink into the auditorium, if you like (your bartender can help you with auditorium-friendly glassware).

YOU CAN CLAP ANYTIME YOU LIKE

Don't let the stereotypes drag you down: it's true that classical music has some conventions about when to clap, but here at Calgary Opera, we're pro-applause! If a high note hit you just right, or a set reveal makes your eyes pop — if you gasp, exhale, grip the armrest, even — you can clap about it.

Hot tip: our artists live for the applause...

YOU DON'T HAVE TO LOVE IT

If your opera experience was more "meh" than "magic", that's ok! We’re so thrilled you came out. We always reach out after the show to ask for any feedback from our audiences, so if you have thoughts to share about what’s on our stages, we welcome them all.

Hot tip: not all operas are the same. If you weren't moved by one show, the rest of them offer different styles, new artists, and fresh stories — we always welcome a returning skeptic with open arms. Come see what else is on!
