Let's Create an Opera
Calgary Opera's Let's Create an Opera program brings an entire school together to create and perform an original opera.
Over a full school year, students work with professional artists to explore generating story ideas and writing the text, musical composition, acting, singing, scenic and costume design, and more. Students, teachers, and the whole school community practice teamwork, creative thinking, and problem-solving to bring their original opera to life.
WHAT'S INCLUDED?
- Creating an original, staged opera by, for, and with your students and school community;
- 3-5 full days each working with a composer, lyricist, and/or songwriter, chosen to suit the musical style and goals of your school;
- 3-5 weeks of staging and production rehearsals with a stage director;
- Basic audio and lighting equipment;
- Your choice of: an interactive opera discovery assembly to kick off the school year, additional teaching artist support during the music teaching process, or a professional opera singer performing a cameo role in the final production.

Applications for the 2026-27 school year are now open. All applying schools will be contacted by early June regarding their placement in the program.
Application deadline is APR 30, 2026.
