Hailed as a “richly powerful singing actress” (Broadway World), Nina Yoshida Nelsen captivates audiences throughout North America and Europe with her world class voice and magnetic stage presence.

​Over the past two seasons, Nina has maintained an active performance schedule alongside her work as Artistic Director of Boston Lyric Opera, demonstrating a commitment to staying grounded in the art form she leads. On the operatic stage, she has sung the role of Suzuki in productions with Utah Opera, Anchorage Opera, and Calgary Opera, as well as the role of Khahn in Huang Ruo's Bound with Anchorage Opera. She has also appeared in concert, most recently as a soloist in Handel's Messiah with the Boise Philharmonic.

In the 2023-2024 season, Nina made role debuts as Melissa in Handel's Alcina with Seattle Opera, Carmen in Carmen with Indianapolis Opera and Marcellina in Le Nozze di Figaro at Utah Opera.  She made her house debuts as Suzuki with Opera Carolina, and as Mother Chen in Huang Ruo's An American Soldier at New York City’s Perelman Arts Center.

In the 2022-2023 season, Ms. Nelsen reprised the role of Suzuki in Madama Butterfly with Atlanta Opera and New Orleans Opera, performed selections of orchestrated lieder by Alma Mahler with the Toledo Symphony, returned to Seattle Opera as Khanh in Huang Ruo's Bound, and joined her home company of Opera Santa Barbara as Mama in An American Dream and Fricka in the Dove reduction of Die Walküre.
