Yasko Sato
Cio-Cio-San
After earning her diploma, master’s degree and doctorate with highest honors from Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music, Yasko Sato completed her training in Italy under the guidance of Raina Kabaivanska.
Season 2025/2026 will see her as Cio Cio San in Madame Butterfly at Calgary Opera and Estonian National Opera, as well as the protagonist of a solo recital in Abiko, Japan. She has also recently appeared as Cio Cio San at Vancouver Opera, Estonian National Opera, Theatre Vanemuine, Opera Lombardia, and as Liù in Turandot at Teatro Rendano in Cosenza.
She has excelled in numerous international competitions including the XLI “Toti Dal Monte” Competition for the role of Cio-Cio-San (Madama Butterfly), the IX Concurso Internacional de Cant “Jaume Aragall” (1st prize and special prize Amics de l’opera de Sabadell), the Music Competition of Japan in Tokyo (1st prize and audience prize).
She made her debut in 2005, in the role of Leonora in Verdi’s Oberto Conte di San Bonifacio on tour in Japan with Teatro Lirico Sperimentale di Spoleto, from which she was later invited to sing Mimì in La Bohème and Leonora in Il Trovatore, and in concert with Leo Nucci, on the occasion of the 40th year since his debut. She later performed at Tokyo National Theatre as Donna Elvira in Don Giovanni, Fiordiligi in Così fan tutte and Mimì in La Bohème, a role that she also performed at Teatro Vittorio Emanuele in Messina.
