Stage Director Samantha Currie chats Pied Piper
Our all-ages opera, Pied Piper, opens next week! Rehearsals are in full swing, and stage director Samantha Currie is brimming with ideas to make this show funny, engaging, and magical for audiences of all sizes. Currie gave us a taste of what makes her job so satisfying:
What do you think the story of Pied Piper is about?
SC: "Being true to your word, and most importantly, being true to yourself."
Do you have a favourite moment in the opera?
SC: "It really is hard to pick just one moment, as I love so many moments throughout.
I could start this answer with I love this moment, and this moment, and this moment…. If had to pick just one, it would be the hopeful message sung at the end of the opera. 'You'll be happier than you have ever been when you open up heart and let the magic in.' When the McPhees all sang it together, I had happy tears.
"In scene 6, the Piper's song 'I'm Gonna Be Rich' makes me want to dance and sing along!
"And as director, my favourite moments happen daily with all the discoveries each one of our talented artists make while bringing this work to life."
What do you hope audiences will get out of seeing Pied Piper live?
SC: "I hope the audiences experience much joy in the sharing of this story, and are reminded that hope and magic can be found in the simplest acts of kindness."
What's a non-opera-related skill you have that you’re most proud of?
SC: "I love to bake AND knit."
